The computer — your Virgil in the world of atoms

Chemists used to create models of molecules using plastic balls and sticks. Today, the modelling is carried out in computers. In the 1970s, Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel laid the foundation for the powerful programs that are used to understand and predict chemical processes. Computer models mirroring real life have become crucial for most advances made in chemistry today.

Chemical reactions occur at lightning speed. In a fraction of a millisecond, electrons jump from one atomic nucleus to the other. Classical chemistry has a hard time keeping up; it is virtually impossible to experimentally map every little step in a chemical process. Aided by the methods now awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, scientists let computers unveil chemical processes, such as a catalyst’s purification of exhaust fumes or the photosynthesis in green leaves.

The work of Karplus, Levitt and Warshel is ground-breaking in that they managed to make Newton’s classical physics work side-by-side with the fundamentally different quantum physics. Previously, chemists had to choose to use either or. The strength of classical physics was that calculations were simple and could be used to model really large molecules. Its weakness, it offered no way to simulate chemical reactions. For that purpose, chemists instead had to use quantum physics. But such calculations required enormous computing power and could therefore only be carried out for small molecules.

This year’s Nobel Laureates in chemistry took the best from both worlds and devised methods that use both classical and quantum physics. For instance, in simulations of how a drug couples to its target protein in the body, the computer performs quantum theoretical calculations on those atoms in the target protein that interact with the drug. The rest of the large protein is simulated using less demanding classical physics.

Today the computer is just as important a tool for chemists as the test tube. Simulations are so realistic that they predict the outcome of traditional experiments.

 After his super melodious love song Nenjukulle (from Kadal) that he released on MTV Unplugged in November last year, AR Rahman has composed and produced a fusion number, titled Zariya, for Coke Studio@MTV Season 3.

The song – based on the theme of motherhood, compassion and happiness – gives a spiritual high. Rahman takes the help of Farah Siraj, a Jordanian singer, and Ani Choying Drolma, a Nepalese Buddhist nun, to create a spell. While Drolma’s chant works like magic and adds to the rhythm, the backing vocals throughout work wonderfully. Siraj comes in at the right time with her harmonious Arabic notes that work like an Indian alap.

 The experimental work, which was performed at the German Electron Synchrotron Facility (DESY) in Hamburg, involved levitating hot metal droplets and observing them as they cooled by irradiating them with x-rays from one of the world's strongest x-ray sources. The research work is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the results have just been published in 'Nature Communications'. 

 (The hot droplet is suspended in a vacuum between two electrodes. While the droplet cools down or is heated up, its structure is continuously monitored by exposing it to radiation from the synchrotron source. Supercooled liquids demonstrate some interesting phenomena when they are irradiated with an extremely bright x-ray source. Shuai Wei, a doctoral student in the Metallic Materials Group headed by Professor Ralf Busch at Saarland University, has been able to observe such phenomena together with research colleagues from DLR are IFW. 'We have been able to show for the first time that a liquid that is being cooled transforms into a liquid of the same concentration but of greater order, before further cooling initiates crystallisation,' said Shuai Wei, who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in physics in Shanghai and has completed his Master's thesis under the supervision of Professor Busch. Busch and his team are particularly interested in liquid metals that, when cooled, eventually freeze to form bulk metallic glasses. As structural materials, these amorphous metals exhibit some very interesting properties.

The Honorable Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh unveiled the new logo for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) during its golden jubilee celebrations.

The elements of the new logo include rising sun, the tri-colour book, depicted in such a manner that they also give the impression of flying birds and 50 in the centre marking the golden jubilee year (1963-2013).

 The  Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today( 6-feb-2013) inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in New Delhi. 

   The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh unveiling the plaque to launch the new logo of the Kendriya Vidyala Sangathan 

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the present government has invested heavily to promote access and quality in education. He said the Right to Education enacted by his government ensures that every child has the Right to eight years of education. The Mid Day Meal programme has assured over 10 crore children are provided meals which has helped in retention on the kids in schools. Focusing on some of the shortcomings in the present education system, the prime Minister said that the standard of teaching needs to be improved and the problems of high drop out among the school children needs to be tackled. Lauding the role of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Dr. Manmohan Singh said these institutions can help in setting standards in school education in the country. He said about 11 lakh students are studying in about eleven thousand Kendriya Vidyalayas which are providing quality education by using latest information technology and teaching of foreign languages as a subject. He also appreciated the role of KVs in catering to the need of Armed forces whose members were frequently transferred. 

                                                             KVS Goldene Jubilee Celebrations

 

 Speaking on the occasion the HRD Dr. M.M.Pallam Raju said KVS has adopted technology in a big way in order to bring substantial changes in the class-rooms through ICT enabled facilities. Most of the KVs have their own website, have internet facilities and computer labs, the computer-pupil ratio is one teacher for twenty one students. With the introduction of ICT enabled class-rooms, use of ICT is being made in the class-room which is expected to lead to significant improvement in the teaching-learning process. 

Dr. Raju said Ministry has nominated KVS as the Model School Organization for the 2500 Model Schools to be set up under the PPP mode.

     now be held    on 16th February,2013 (Saturday) from 10.00 AM to 12.00 Noon in all 
      schools except the schools falling in Winter Bound areas.
 2. The examination shall be conducted in the school.
3. Candidates shall appear against their Registration No. issued earlier.
   
4. After the completion of the test, the candidates will hand over the answer sheet to
